Combined Heat and Power Installation Belfast & Northern Ireland

BSH Limited installs combined heat and power within combination fuelled plantrooms, integrating on-site electricity generation with heating, cooling and controls through pre-packaged construction.

Combined Heat and Power Installation Belfast reflects BSH Limited's installed CHP capability across commercial and industrial buildings. BSH designs combination fuelled systems that include heating, cooling, combined heat and power, domestic and control systems, and CHP installation is the on-site delivery of on-site generation integrated with that wider plant rather than a standalone generator.

Combined heat and power generates electricity on site while capturing the heat produced for space heating, hot water or process loads, so both the power and the heat are used rather than the heat being wasted. BSH's consultancy specialisms include fuel cell, co- and trigeneration systems, reflecting the depth behind that integrated installation.

Where the CHP installation is delivered through a pre-packaged plantroom, the generation, pumps, heat distribution and controls are assembled and inspected off site before delivery, keeping the CHP integrated with the wider combination fuelled system and supporting rapid hook-up and commissioning on site.

On-site generation integrated with the building

A combined heat and power installation generates electricity on site and captures the heat produced for the building's heating, hot water or process loads. BSH sizes the CHP against the building's simultaneous heat and power demand rather than as a standalone generation unit, so the unit runs usefully loaded and the recovered heat is actually used — which is what delivers the efficiency rather than the unit simply running.

Co- and trigeneration

Where a building has a simultaneous cooling demand, the recovered heat can drive absorption chilling, extending the CHP installation to trigeneration — combined cooling, heat and power from one fuel source. Yazaki absorption chilling primarily utilises heat as its main power source, so the cooling is served by the CHP's recovered heat rather than by separate electric chillers. BSH holds the accolade for the largest trigeneration plant room in Europe in 2012, designed and built for Tesco in Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland.

Delivered through plantrooms

Where the CHP is delivered through a pre-packaged plantroom, the generation, pumps and controls are built and inspected off site before delivery as a plug and power solution. That off-site fabrication reduces on-site downtime and keeps the CHP integrated with the heating, cooling and control systems from the outset, with the largest plug and power plantroom in terms of power at 1.4Mw thermal.

How BSH can help

Problem

A building that buys grid electricity and generates heat separately wastes the heat released during power generation, paying twice for what one integrated plant could supply. CHP installed as a standalone generator — sized without reference to the building's heat load, or running without a use for its recovered heat — runs part-loaded or vents the heat it captures, so the efficiency the installation was meant to deliver never appears.

Reaction

Unintegrated CHP raises running cost, wastes recovered heat and can leave a building with a generator that runs inefficiently because it was sized for electrical output alone. Consultants and facilities managers need an engineering partner who installs the CHP as part of a combination fuelled system, sizing the generation against the real heat and power loads and using the recovered heat.
